Nu Trio
Pre-order NU TRIO HERE on CD or Download.
B Side Recordings unveils a new recording: NU TRIO by multi-instrumentalist Jamie Breiwick. This provocative new trio brings together the voices of Breiwick on trumpet and piano, Chicago drummer/percussionist Tim Daisy and the bassist Tim Ipsen. This new release takes listeners on a journey through the avant-garde, free jazz, and post-bop realms, exploring a collection of new original compositions and a handful of spontaneous improvisations. These seven pieces draw inspiration from the groundbreaking work of iconic and forward thinking artists such as Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, Pharoah Sanders, and Andrew Hill — continuing Breiwick’s exploration of the lineage of Don Cherry on his two previous releases for Shifting Paradigm Records — Awake, the Music of Don Cherry, Vols. 1 & 2. Nu Trio’s direction is a homage to the spirit of innovation and exploration that these master musicians embodied, and that Breiwick, Daisy and Ipsen exemplify.
The single, Try To Remember, featuring Breiwick on piano, has already garnered international airplay on Radio D59B (Belgrade/Berlin) and on the UK’s Blue in Green Radio (London) ahead of the full album’s late-May release.
The new album will be available on all major streaming platforms and for purchase on CD or download starting May 31, 2024. Milwaukee-area public can look forward to an immersive listening experience to celebrate the release on 5/31/24. Jamie Breiwick, Tim Daisy, and Tim Ipsen will be performing a special set at Rev Pop (2559 S Howell Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53207), bringing their inspired live interpretations of the album’s tracks to a limited audience as a part of the Bay View Jazz Fest on 5/31/24 at 5:30pm.

The Shape of Rock's Favorite Albums of 2021
Thanks to WMSE 91.7, The Shape of Rock for selecting KASE, Seasons as a favorite of 2021!
It is the time of year again where every self respecting music nerd compiles their list of favorite music from the last 12 months. And here at the Shape of Rock we are no different. In preparation for Tuesday's Shape of Rock, where we will showcase these albums and more; here is a list of my 20 favorite albums from 2021.

Check out The Shape of Rock with Craig Mertes on your FM dial, 91.7 in the Greater Milwaukee area or online at https://www.wmse.org/
What shape is your rock? Is it a soft indie radio dial like circle or a complex math rock dodecahedron? Perhaps your audio geometry angles towards hip-hop rap-azoids or sharp, metal-edged punk rock triangles. Expect the Shape of Rock to deliver a heavy dose of Milwaukee beer-can blues, Wisconsin sharp cheddar-shaped jazz, and Northwoods pine tree-shaped country. Whatever your preference, don’t be a square – tune in from 6 – 9 a.m. every Tuesday morning.

Hollywood
...no gigs, no recording sessions, and everyone I knew was trying to figure out how to stay creative and musically active in this strange new world.
I am excited to announce the release of a new piece of music. It is a single song called "Hollywood" that was composed and arranged by myself and my longtime friend and musical cohort, Matthew Meixner. I've been making music with Matt since the late 90's when we played together in a wonderful and genre-defying band called Hudson. Matt is a bit of a whiz when it comes to vintage and analog synthesizers. It always fascinated me, venturing into Matt's musical world (literally and figuratively), actual stacks of keyboards, devices, wires, parts, doo-dads & whatzits galore. Anyways, this piece started off about 7 years ago when Matt and I were meeting weekly to improvise and record. For what became "Hollywood", I had a sketch of a chord progression but no melody. We recorded a Korg Rhythm 55 drum machine with Matt playing the chord sketches, and with myself improvising over the top. At the time, I was working in Milwaukee and living in Racine, so when I began teaching in Racine in 2015, the project was all but abandoned. Fast forward to 2020 during the height of the pandemic... no gigs, no recording sessions, and everyone I knew was trying to figure out how to stay creative and musically active in this strange new world. I remember calling and facetiming friends and trying to play music with them just to be able to play together despite the challenges of time and distance. One of those friends I connected with was Matt, and he unearthed this 7 year old sketch-of-a-tune we had started but forgotten about. He sent me the original rough recording of the improvisation and we decided to try to make something out of it. I transcribed the original one-take improvisation and sent it to Jason (flute), Tommy (guitar), and Devin (drums) for that extra little seasoning. Every part (hint, there are 29 tracks on this song) was recorded remotely by each individual and masterfully woven together into a lush soundscape by Matt (and expertly mastered by another longtime friend Todd Richards.) I think this piece captures the dire, unknown, and yet hopeful time we are currently living in & I hope it brings a little light to you, wherever and however you are. I hope you enjoy "Hollywood".

I am excited announce the pre-order of my latest album with the group KASE. KASE is a really fun story that goes back quite a many years, actually. When I was teaching middle school at Maple Dale School I had a young student, Ian, (knowsthetime) in band and jazz band. Ian was a very solid middle school drummer, however, I soon witnessed his true passion was DJ'ing. In the 7th grade talent show, he performed an incredible DJ set in which he absolutely destroyed - literally smashing the record at the end of the set. I somewhat remember that he had a smoke machine or a laser machine?... or maybe my faded memory is adding to the legend. Everyone in the room was in awe. It was clear he was passionate, dedicated and skilled beyond his years. I took a mental note in that instant and made sure to keep in touch with him well after his middle school tenure.
Fast forward several years later... I started hiring Ian to do DJ sets for various shows around Milwaukee, opening for my various bands and spinning in between sets. During that time, he was blowing up the scene in Madison while in school at UW... PHD student in Psychology and moonlighting at night as the most in demand live DJ around town (also developing into one of the most creative producers I've heard anywhere). He had his hand in nearly every Hiphop show that came through Madison. Several more years passed by... bassist John Christensen I were lamenting the lack of opportunities we had to play music together. We discussed possible projects to remedy that situation. The lightbulb clicked on. I had always wanted to try a trio/quartet - drummer-less - replaced by a DJ. A quick message to Joe Katz at The Highbury was all it took. The Highbury had been a personal musical laboratory since the early 2000's, carrying over from The Nomad on Brady Street as one of Milwaukee's creative music hotspots. One quick text later and we had a steady gig at The HB. KASE was born.
KASE performs completely improvised soundscapes. Every show we have ever performed has been 100% off the cuff, no preconceived compositions, melodies, or chords. We added Scott Currier (keys),Tony Barba (saxophone/bass clarinet), and frequent collaborator CRASHprez (raps) for this special live set. The music was captured one icy night at Company Brewing in Riverwest Milwaukee in February 2019, pre-covid. (seems like a generation ago already - live crowds, sans masks, sans worries).
It will be released on January 1st worldwide digitally, streaming (and on CASSETTE!!! that's right, you heard me on cassette - my 80's childhood self is giddy over this!) as the first new release on my new label B Side Recordings. You can peruse the B Side back catalogue here: bsiderecordings.com A preorder will get you an immediate download of the single "The Beholder". The rest will be blasted out into the universe on Jan 1 - cassettes shipping then as well.
We hope you enjoy the music.
Yours in Music,
Jamie
"KASE is Jamie Breiwick (trumpet), John Christensen on (acoustic bass), and knowsthetime (turntables and ableton). Alive features special guests Tony Barba (woodwinds), Scott Currier (keybords) and the brilliant CRASHprez (raps). KASE invents textural soundscapes – incorporating live beats, turntablism, electronic elements, free improvisation and extended forms into the music that is crafted and created spontaneously. References for this project run the gamut from the contemporary mainstream to the avant guard to the classic... mixing jazz & hiphop – different branches of the same tree. That said, KASE has created something new and unexpected with this band and with this recording. You are invited to join them on that journey."
